Our Health Focus Activity

What a wonderful event.  Thanks to our Relief Society Activities Board for such a delicious, healthy dinner and wonderful decorations.  Our speaker, Shawna Laursen, MD, did a fabulous job of teaching us more about nutrition.  Here are a few highlights from the information she shared with us.

Food is fuel.  Healthy fuel leads to healthy bodies.  Healthy bodies repair themselves and stay healthy.
Real food has a balance of all the nutrients our bodies need in the way we need them with all the cofactors, micro nutrients and enzymes that we need to absorb the food.
We need REAL food.
What is real food?  In general, the less processed and closer to alive a food is, the healthier it is going to be for our bodies.
Everyday Tip: Shop the outer portion of the grocery store, produce, dairy, meat, basic bread.  All the packaged, processed, calorically dense, nutritionally empty is in the middle isles.
Rule of Thumb: There is a reason that the fruits and vegetables are all different colors.  The colors come from different vitamins and minerals.  Think about eating "A RAINBOW A DAY".  If you really can get in all those colors (not from skittles) you are likely getting a full complement of all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to keep itself healthy.
How much do we need?  Recommendations are about 2000 kcal a day.  There are tons of websites that will help you calculate how many calories you need and many different diet plans - do a google search for the "2000 kcal diet".
When do we need it?
All day long!  Your body needs fuel in the morning to burn efficiently.  Skipping breakfast keeps your metabolism at its lowest levels.
Weight Loss: There are no magic pills or formulas.  You need to to look at what, when, how much you are eating and how much you are moving.
Exercise: It's not just about how many calories you burn.  Exercise is essential to health.
